I have patients rotate seeds according to the moon to help balance their hormones (including men). The omega 6 oils in sunflower and sesame seeds promote the progesterone, which is often the first hormone to drop in menopause and is often low with people experiencing adrenal fatigue. This often happens when there are too many stressors or the person lacks the appropriate skills to handle those stressors. Indicators of adrenal fatigue are low energy, increased worrying, anxiousness, nervousness, difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep, not waking rested, irritability, mood swings, anger or easily teary. The adrenals are responsible to produce not only the hormones to deal with stressors, but, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone as well. I often see this with women who have young children, are woken several times a night and eventually have a difficult time getting back to sleep and are experiencing low energy, lack of motivation, feeling down (which is often mis-diagnosed as post-partum depression) or have amplified PMS symptoms. Men often exhibit irritability, anger, lack of drive or unusual weight gain.
The omega 3 oils in flax, pumpkin, hemp or chia seeds stabilize the estrogen which often over-rides the progesterone. Symptoms of water retention, bloating, swelling in your hands or feet, breast tenderness, lethargy, mid-abdominal weight gain, cold hands or feet indicate excess estrogen. This is often the case in menopause, since it is typically the progesterone that decreases first, which creates a relative excess of estrogen. For men, increased estrogen instead of testosterone will decrease energy and can contribute to lack of motivation , drive or poor libido.
Therefore, by alternating seeds, hormones really do stay more balanced. Sometimes that is the only change a patient makes and her hot flushes or night sweats cease.
Why according to the moon? Because that is how our hormones fluctuate naturally.
